The 100 Million Dollar Mission

The current economic downturn in the United States affects every American, but those hardest hit are those with no safety net: the 37 million Americans living below the poverty line, and the 47 million Americans without adequate health insurance. This spring, however, those of us who have been blessed with health and financial stability have an unprecedented opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those in our communities — and across our country and the world — who are faced with daily challenges that we cannot imagine…

Conflict between communities of different faith traditions impacts many people’s lives at local and national levels. As tensions between Christians and Muslims rise in many parts of the world, MCC is working to bring people together to build connections of dialogue and understanding.

Beginning in May 2008, the federal government’s economic stimulus plan will distribute tax rebates to over 130 million American households. Payments for most recipients will range from $300 to $1,200, depending on income, filing status and number of qualifying dependent children ($300 is added for each qualifying child). For some of us, this money will provide welcome relief, and will help us to provide for our families or pay down our debts. But for others, the money is an unexpected bonus — a windfall that could easily be spent, but isn’t required to meet an immediate need.

We encourage — and challenge — you to join us in our goal to donate $100 million to organizations serving the poor in America and around the world. To reach that goal requires donations of $1200 from only 83,300 of the 130 million people who will receive rebates — a fraction of 1% of the total recipients (and of the total $168 billion stimulus package).

Let’s RISE together and take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity!
